Joining forces to fight diabetes

FAMILIES joined forces with the Mayor of Calderdale on World Diabetes Day to make sure people know about theJoining forces to fight diabetes condition.

Arshad Mahmood visited the Carnegie Club at Brooksbank School, Elland, where children and their parents are learning about healthy eating and exercise - which can both help ward off Type 2 diabetes.

He said he was keen to see the scheme, funded by NHS Calderdale, because his chosen charity this year is Support Us Supporting Each Other, which helps more than 80 young people in the area cope with the condition.

"It is wonderful to see a scheme provided through the NHS that helps young people become more active and teaches them how to enjoy a healthier lifestyle," he said.

Gaynor Scholefield, public health manager and diabetes commissioning lead at NHS Calderdale, said: "As part of our commitment to improving health locally NHS Calderdale has invested in this programme and so far outcomes are looking good."

Scarlett Darby, 13, of Elland, was granted an NHS-funded place at a Carnegie bootcamp in Bradford over the summer, and carried on with the club when it came to Brooksbank.

She has lost 18lbs so far, and joined spinning classes and a badminton club.

Mum Jayne, who goes with her every Saturday, said: "She would have been at stalemate if not for this fantastic opportunity.

"She's happier and I'm glad that's she's more active now."

The next round of the Carnegie Club will be held at Rastrick High School and Raven Street Community Centre in the new year.
